Qigong means energy work. It is the art of cultivating qi to promote health and vitality. Qi is the energy of life, it is the very energy that drives the planets along the orbits and fills the Earth, the air, the rocks and our rivers. Qi is the vital life force (also referred to as prana in yoga) in all living things; the life force in the human body and mind.
Qigong is a form of exercise which works to build and maintain the body’s qi energy and to ensure there is a free circulation everywhere in the body for the qi to move freely, creating a more vibrant life.
Qigong works on re-educating mind and body through exercise and self-exploration, encouraging new ways of living as a result.
Qigong exercises have a strong mental component, and often involve a meditation.
Qigong is also designed to mobilize joints, stretch tendons, strengthen muscles and improve balance and co-ordination. The movements are slow, even, steady and graceful, demanding great muscle control without strain or impact. These dynamic exercises improve circulation of blood and lymph, as well as qi.
Qigong is a peaceful art wholly concerned with health and healing. It is the art of using and controlling life energy, for according to ancient Chinese principles of healing, physical and mental fitness become possible only when sufficient qi of the right quality is able to flow freely around the body along its designated pathways.
